The Tale of a Tail:

It is a long tale. But finally I have finished. Last year I mentored a Laguna student who was building a Hollywood monster suit. I took on the task of building the tale assembly for her suit. I did a lot of work early on but had to lay it aside during the heat wave during the summer while I huddled inside in air conditioning. Like all projects laid aside it was hard to get back to. This last week I finally finished the tail and delivered it. Here are some photos of said assembly.

Hi Ho Silver Electro Plating

Last year I created a bronze chalice. It was designed for wine but bronze and wine do not go well together because of the copper content.

There are several reasons given for the downfall of the Roman Empire ranging from outsourcing their army to decadence behavior of the ruling class. Very few list plumbing as the root cause of decline but the end of the Roman Empire was a lead pipe cinch.

Lead piping lead to lead poisoning which lead to madness that lead to decadence for the ruling class who could afford plumbing, which lead to decline and rats in the Coliseum.

Roman bronze contained lead and even sometime mercury and added to the overall poisoning of the greatest people, the greatest nation. Nothing like us has ever been.

Modern bronze is made of nine parts copper to one part tin. "Because copper is a fairly inert metal, allergic reactions to copper occurs usually when the metal forms compounds with atmospheric pollutants. Symptoms are less attributable to copper but more to this copper containing new compound". 1

"Copper Utensils with copper interiors should never be used for acidic foods, with pH of 6.0 or below, since toxic compounds can form if food is cooked, stored or served from such containers. Even if copper pans are lined with tin, they should not be used for acidic foods such as fruits, fruit juices, salad dressings, tomatoes, vinegar containing foods, etc. Copper bowls may be used for beating egg whites, or copper kettles for cooking high sugar foods like fudge, for these foods are alkaline. Utensils with copper on the bottom or outside, and stainless steel, aluminum, or a porcelain enamel interior finish are safe to use and conduct heat well". 2

Even thou allergic reaction to copper is rare, taking mostly the form of reactions to copper contraceptive devices and in some extreme cases skin rash at mere contact with copper, acid reaction to copper in foods is a more serious problem because of the creation of toxins when copper is exposed to acid.

EXAMPLE: Nitric Acid + Copper

"Cu(s) + 4HNO3(aq) ——> Cu(NO3)2(aq) + 2NO2(g) + 2H2O(l)

Copper is oxidized by concentrated nitric acid, HNO3, to produce Cu2+ ions; the nitric acid is reduced to nitrogen dioxide, a poisonous brown gas with an irritating odor". 3

Other acids produce other toxins. But whatever the toxin you do not want to ingest it with you food or wine. At the best case the taste will be effected. At the worst case you will be poisoning yourself.

All my research lead me to silver, which meant silver electro plating. I found a really cool and inexpensive way to do this with a kit from http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/plugnplate.htm

Once that was finished then I had another problem. How do you polish silver without poisoning yourself with the polish? I found a food safe polish at http://www.metalwax.com.

So why am I telling you all this in a animation blog? Good question! This Thursday I am teaching a workshop in silver electro plating in my metal casting class.

AniMazing Spotlight Festival: Nov 7th & 8th

Just finished judging short animation for Tee Bosustow`s AniMazing Spotlight Festival, November 7 & 8, at the Egyptian Theatre (http://www.animazspot.com/animazspot/Home.html). There is something about watching lots of short animations that invigorates and revitalizes me. Mark your calendar and join the fun.

Bronze Casting Call

It is bronze casting time again. I have done a lot of casting in latex and resin. And even a little silver but there is something about bronze that really has a natural feel, a warmth. Belt buckles seem to be the thing of the moment. Christmas presents are going to be in need before too long.

IndieCade In Review

I had a blast at IndieCade. Hung with cool gaming people. Talked about things I love. Played some killer games. Minor Battle, www.garagegames.com

by the guys from USC was so fun. Four mad men running around 4 screens looking for our characters and trying to bomb the other team`s castle. I was on the winning team for my game.

Another game I loved was Cogs from Lazy 8 http://www.cogsgame.com Cogs is one of the finest puzzle games ever. Had great fun with it.

Dear Esther is a hunting ghost story pretending to be a game. It uses the Half-Life 2 engine which you have to have installed to play (sic) Dear Esther . Well worth the look.

www.modalkombat.com is not a game you can play. It is an event you have to experience. I had a great time talking to David Hindman and Evan Drummond over the event and loved the way they controlled Super Nintendo and N64 games with guitars.

The highlight the weekend was slipping away Saturday afternoon to spend time with Martha Sigall over at the Culver City Museum. Always a joy to talk to Martha.

Home For Innovation

Yesterday I saw the future of gaming. And guess what it was in the old play it has always been, the creative chewy center so long neglected.

When E3 split into E for the Big 3 Only and E for the Fanboys they call everybody else creativity, the middle/little man and woman were left in limbo. The independent trying inventiveness and innovation was programmed right the hell out in the cold.

IndieCade http://www.indiecade.com has given a home to innovation. It has filled the gap left by E for the Big 3 Only. I have seen 2 guys with acoustic guitars controlling N64 games with their sound. I have seen 4 former USC students running frantically around a cube of monitors bumping into each other trying to follow their characters as the characters jumped from screen to screen. I have seen text based games and role playing games that the market doesn’t want to have anything to do with any more. And More and More.

Come out to IndieCade in Culver City running today through Sunday.
