David Cutler is considered to be a very talented draftsman with great-illustrated backgrounds as such “Home On The Range” (2004). Who was the Design and Art Director on the film. Although the movie’s story was weak, the background and paintwork are stylized in simple, yet beautiful color.

David Cutler is most notably for his work on “The Rescuers Down Under,” where he was the head supervisor animator on the lizard character, Joanna. I was so excited to see that he did the animating for her, since she was my favorite character. I really admired his technique on animating a lizard’s walk, which I have tried animating before and found it to be very difficult. I watched the Bluray of the film, where I stopped and looked at each frame that featured Joanna to get a feel for her character and his drawing style of acting. In all of his animating, he shows a sense of bold action and acting. The character Joanna always had an attitude that always showed in her walks, and her facial expression told her character very well.

I wasn’t able to get in contact with David Cutler, but I read in one of my History of Animation books by Charles Solomon, that Glen Kleane was originally suppose to be the head animator on Ursula in “The Little Mermaid,” but he was moved up to head supervisor of animation, while Ruben A. Aquino became supervising animator on Ursula while David Cutler animated a few scenes with Ursula.

David Cutler, along with a team of other great Disney animators became the 2nd group of “Disney Special Projects Unit” which was a off sight training lot that set up animated shorts to that helped cut the costs for Disney to train new animators working in the studio.
