Animator, Colorist, Editor, Director, Writer, Illustrator, Producer, Storyboard Artist

Bio Summary:
James is an animator and filmmaker who currently works in the UK. He has been a part of a number of animations, including the recent Paddington film. He also writes, directs and produces his own short films under the company name JH Films, and is hoping to become a director in the future.

Early Life/Family:
James was always interested in art as a child, from drawing too much during class to watching Disney animations since age six. He remembers wanting to be an animator as young as age eleven. James' parents have been supportive of his goals, and he shares his creative spirit with his mother.

James Hickey was educated at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor's of Art in Computer Animation.

Career Outline:
James' career started nearly two years after he graduated from university. He took a job at a grocery store in order to dedicate his time on working on his animation. After a few months of stubbornly sending out his reel, he was hired as a generalist for a documentary called "Weaponology." From there he has gone on to work at a number of studios like Slurpy Studios, Picasso Pictures, and blink. He also has his own studio called JH Flims where he writes, produces and directs short films. James is currently working at MPC in London, UK.

Comments On Style:
James' style in his own film shorts is very whimsical, with an undertone of social commentary.

Disney animations were a huge influence on James as a child, and watching them was the reason he wanted to become an animator. He attributes his success to his sense of self-motivation and sheer determination to work in animation.

In corresponding with James I found him to be very nice and humble about his work. He was all too willing to pass on any wisdom as an animator and student, though very honest that it all takes hard work. "Hard working Animator with a real passion for his work. A great asset to any visual effects/animation team." -Alex Hollowood

On the first day of school as a child, James got in trouble for drawing too much and not listening to the teacher. During the making of Paddington, the actor of Paddington, Colin Firth was replaced with another voice actor. This, as a result, was a bit of a headache for the animators, who needed to recreate mannerisms, line readings and the inflections of the bear. The animators needed to rush to finish the film in time, James included.

James is fulfilling a lifelong dream currently, by working on the upcoming Disney film the Jungle Book.
