He is from Austin, Texas. Most of his child hood was spent trying to
re-create scenes from his favorite Ray Harryhausen films with toys.
He Graduated from Rhode Island School of design in Film/Animation/
Video. He then moved to San Francisco where he became an assistant rigger
for the Tim Burton Movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. After he went
and continued doing various stop-motion productions. James and the Giant
peach was one and also a television series called Bump in the Night. In
1996 he set up his own animation company called Fat Cactus Films. He has
produced and directed a mix of stop motion projects as well as his animated
short “The Devil went down to Georgia” which has been screened at various
film festivals around the world. In 1998 he moved to Portland, Oregon where
he directed three episodes of eddie Murphy’s Emmy Award winning Television
series P.J’s. In 2002 Tim Burton had asked Johnson to join him in directing
the stop moyion feature, Corpse Bride.
