Phil Monroe

October 31, 1916 to July 13, 1988

Animator and Director at Warner Bros.

Bio Summary:
Phil Monroe first stared with the Buddy strips, and continued on to do commercials, including the Tony the Tiger and Charlie the Tuna ads. He worked for Warner Bros. for the majority of his life.

Early Life/Family:
Had a wife named Beverly, a son, two grandchildren and a sister.

Career Outline:
Phil moved around the studio quite a bit before settling in with Chuck Jones unit in 1946. He moved from Tashlin to Freleng and then moved to Jones. In the early ‘50’s Phil decided to take a job with Leo Burnett ad agency where he developed Tony the Tiger and Snap, Crackle, Pop. Then, Phil went back to Warner Bros. to direct some of the later cartoons after Chuck Jones was fired. Phil also worked with Chuck on the Chipmunks TV special.

Comments on Style:
Being an avid looney tunes fan, I have seen quite a bit of Monroe’s animation. The most notable Bugs Bunny short, to me, would be the Rabbit of Seville. This short has always been one of my favorites. He has also animated quite a few of the Wiley E. Coyote and Roadrunner shorts, which I also enjoy. Phil animated a short bit in a cartoon called Dog Gone South. It’s not a very long scene, but it is well animated, and the posing is great. He also did another scene in the short titled Falling Hare.

Died of pancreatic cancer.
