Subject: Rich Draper

Freelance Designer and Animation Director

Bio Summary
Rich Draper was born and raised in Canada. Growing up, Rich was constantly drawing cartoons and creating characters, never thinking this would be a possible career; Rich went off to university to continue his education. After graduating with a degree in Art History, he realized it would be much more fun to draw cartoons and make films, so Rich went to Sheridan College for Animation. Rich has since worked on a wide variety of projects, including feature films, games and commercials. During the past twenty-five years, he has worked as an animator, director, character designer, storyboard artist and illustrator, as well as taking the time to create a short animated film.

Early Life/Family
Rich grew up in a pretty traditional, middle class home. He was always interested in art and loved to draw, but also had an interest in sports and wanted to be an architect in high school. He even took classes that went toward such a career. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find a suitable architect school and ended up studying animation.

Rich names Disney and MGM cartoons in the 50s as some of his influences. His biggest influence however is UPA. He really enjoyed the graphic styles of the cartoons.

He describes himself as quiet and introspective. He doesn’t like to be the center of attention

Rich recalls the time when he had a supervising job while working on Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. Their main studio was in Toronto, but he needed to travel to Dublin to take a look at the clean-up. He really enjoyed the international travel and learning how different work weeks are in different countries
